First published in 1953 as Christmas at Candleshoe, Penguin reissued it in 1978 as Candleshoe to capitalize on the Walt Disney movie of that name starring David Niven, Helen Hayes and Jodie Foster. I have not seen the movie, but, to read the description in Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide , the connection would seem to be rather tenuous.
From old Miss Candleshoe, for whom time has stood still for half a century (at least), to the resourceful young Jay, the book is full of eccentric characters who would undoubtedly contribute to a very funny film.
A quick and easy read, though it dragged a little in spots.
This was my first book by Michael Innes.
Will I read more? Definitely.
Will I reread Candleshoe? Unlikely.
