I know that this kept me scratching my head for a long time.

Just cut a strip of paper, give it one twist and tape the ends together, like in the diagram.

It's nicer to have a fairly long strip of paper, just cutting a strip from a regular sheet of letter paper is a little short. Two strips taped together is better. Or use larger paper instead.
